ISO/IEC 7816 Standard

ISO / IEC 7816
is an international standard for electronic ID cards with contacts, in particular smart cards, set up jointly by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

The majority of the chip / smart cards, in the United Kingdom, Europe and the USA confirm the following ISO standards for magnetic cards.

Full copies of these standards can purchased of www.iso.org and www.ansi.org.

ISO / IEC 7816 is a multi-part international standard in fourteen parts broken. ISO / IEC 7816 parts 1, 2  to 3 deal only with contact smart cards and the various aspects of the card and its interfaces, including the card dimensions, the electrical interface and protocols. ISO / IEC 7816 Part 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 13 and 15 are applicable to all types of smart cards (contact and contactless).

You define the logical structure map (files and data elements), various commands, the Application Programming Interface for ease of use, application management, biometric verification, cryptographic services and application naming.

ISO / IEC 7816 part 10 is used for the memory cards for applications such as prepaid calling cards or vending machines. ISO / IEC 7816 Part 7 defines a secure relational database concept for chip cards based on the SQL interfaces (SCQL).

The material

Plastic cards can be made of different materials: PVC, POLYPROPYLENE (heat resistant), PETG and PET (compatible for contact with food Commission Directive 2002/72/EC), POLYESTER, POLYSTYRENE.

The most used material is PVC. The paper can be laminated or not. The most used are laminated as needed to be personalized with thermographic printers.

The ISO Standard cards are laminated.

Dimensions

The main feature of the ISO Standard cards are the dimensions: width 85.59 mm, height 54.98 mm and 0.76 mm thickness.

Other thicknesses are between 0.30 mm and 0.82 mm (chip cards).

Printing of Plastic cards (Badges)

The plastic cards can be printed with various technologies where the most known are:

1. The typographic method, suitable for volumes above a few thousand pieces and for cards that are subject to greater use.

2. Direct thermographic method, suitable for small series up to a few thousand cards and cards that are personalized with variable data.

3. Indirect thermographic method, suitable for small series up to a few thousand cards, cards personalized with variable data and in particular for cards with not so flat surface (chip cards).
